The Millis Ecumenical Food Pantry was established in 1980 by an ecumenical committee drawn from the churches and other places of worship. The Pantry is located in the basement of the Church of Christ, Congregational but it is supported by contributions and volunteers from all the churches as well as many fraternal and civic organizations and local businesses. The Hours of Operation are 10 a.m. to 12 noon every Saturday and on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
The Pantry serves about 60 clients (early 2007), who are residents of Millis of all ages, including many families. When registering for the first time clients must show proof of town residence, but after that confidentiality is protected by using ID numbers only. Clients walk through the food pantry with its well stocked shelves, choosing what they and their families need, much as anyone would walk through a grocery store. There are limits on quantities depending on family size, but a good variety of food staples, some treats, and household necessities such as laundry detergent, paper goods, and toiletries. There are also freezers with meat, butter, and orange juice usually available. No one is ever turned away from the Pantry hungry. Even visitors from out of town will be given food once and then referred to the appropriate resource near their homes. The townspeople are very supportive of the Millis Ecumenical Food Pantry. There are frequent special collections of food and money and consistent enough monetary donations that the Pantry is able to maintain the large quantities of items that always need restocking, especially laundry and dish detergent, paper towels and toilet paper.
Support is also received from the charities we all associate with the Food Pantry such as Project Bread and the annual "Walk for Hunger." For more information please contact our church office, 508 376-5034. |
